Our History
The History of Barry Healthcare and Senior Living
In 1836, Worcester village was established by a St. Louis firm. Within six weeks, the first residents, David Greene and his family, arrived. Streets were named after War of 1812 Naval officers, and special blocks named Church, College, Market, and Merchant Squares were designated to address town needs. The plan featured seven parks; Lafayette Park is the sole surviving one, where the first event was a Fourth of July celebration with a 90-foot Liberty Pole.
Barry Through the Ages
In 1839, the town sought a Post Office but had to change its name due to a town with the same name in Illinois. Mrs. Mary Brown chose “Barre,” her hometown’s name, but a clerical error led to it being recorded as “Barry” because of a local official’s name.
Barry’s residents and leaders have consistently striven for progress and beauty. The city has witnessed the construction of schools, libraries, churches, and a public pool, along with improvements to infrastructure like sewer and water lines. The opening of the Central Illinois Expressway (I-72) in 1991 along Barry’s north edge has ushered in a new era of economic growth and change.
